Grief Meditations

Dealing With GriefGrief is a multi-faceted response to loss, particularly to the loss of someone or something to which a bond was formed. Although conventionally focused on the emotional response to loss, it also has physical, cognitive, behavioral, social, and philosophical dimensions. While the terms are often used interchangeably, bereavement often refers to the state of loss, and grief to the reaction to loss.

While many adults who grieve are able to work through their loss independently, accessing additional support from licensed psychologists or psychiatrists may promote the process of healing. Because they are less developed psychologically, grief in children is usually more complex.

Grief counseling, professional support groups or educational classes, and peer-led support groups are primary resources available to the bereaved.

  1. Hello,
Responding to the TRF presentation on Sexual Grief, Week 1. A cave is NOT a safe place. For a hostage it is a trap. There’s no way out; the walls are closed. As an early childhood sexual abuse survivor a cave is the last place I would want to be, especially with the one who caused my grief. I could feel my anxiety level rising. Dark, dank, cold, fresh air only at the opening, no circulation, got to get out of here, no way I’m headed further in.
I like who you seem to be, but did you really think about this?

  2. Hi Michele,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me about your experience within the TRF Tuesday program. I hear that the proposal of where I suggested people go in the meditation was unsettling and emotionally triggering. That’s never the intention of any of the processing work.
It is hard when doing this type of work to know what will or won’t cause a person to react. I understand everything you are saying, and next time, different places to go will be offered as a means to hopefully avert any chance for others to have the experience you had. My use of the imagery comes from Joseph Campbell’s The Hero’s Journey, Moving from the Ordinary into the depths of the place mentioned in the workshop and coming out of it after having met and dealt with the shadows within there. The goal of the rainstorm was to help people feel movement in their minds and bodies to release what was experienced. It is with the utmost respect that I say to you, I hear you, and I support your voice and feedback. We are all students and teachers. We can only be our best selves when we listen and shift. And that is what I will do going forward.

    Warmly,
    Edy
