Week 2 to Joy: Fake It Til You Make It

Let’s play a game.

It is the “fake it til you make” game. You and I know that there are days or weeks when there is an internal awareness that joy has abandoned you. You wake up in the morning and you know that you are feeling unhappy, unmotivated and joy is the farthest emotion from your being.

* The First Fake out:
Imagine a time when you felt joy. Before you hop out of bed or jump into a shower, remember that time you felt joy. Use all of your senses for this. Who was around you when you felt this joy? Were you alone and in a quiet, delicious solitude?

* The Second Fake out:
Convince your brain that you are serious about wanting to be a change agent – altering the brain waves of sadness or despair into images of beautiful color and now wrap your body, your mind and your soul with that color or colors.

* The Third Fake Out:
Smile. Yes, just smile. Look in the mirror, and smile. Walk outside and smile. Listen to music and smile. Teach your facial muscles that a smile affects the rest of your body.

* The Fourth Fake Out:
Engage in conversation with people around you. Feign interest if you can’t summon up the true interest in the conversation and just listen. The art of listening, is actually grounding and it gives you a release from your own interior conversation.

Do you know people who are filled with joy? Think about what they do and how you feel when you are with them.

Pretend for a minute, then 2 minutes and continue to add time to the “fake it til you make it” exercise to make joy part of you.  You’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll begin feeling actual joy. People will treat you better. You’ll also get a daily practice at what it’s like to feel joyful.

Some people say fake it til you become a complete fraud: don’t be a fraud, be a friend to the part of you that desires to be released from the grip of joyless internal experiences.
